Manicani Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar

In a peaceful demonstration of solidarity and concern for their homeland, members of the Protect Manicani Island Society Incorporated (PROMISI) along with the local residents from various barangays, gathered in a silent protest at the Hinatuan Mining Corporation (HMC) campsite in Barangay Buenavista last March 12. The protest was aimed at voicing opposition to the transition from care and maintenance to the active mine operation phase by HMC.

The event saw the presence of officials from the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) representing different barangays of Manicani Island. Their participation underscored the community’s collective apprehension about the resumption of mining activities and its potential impact on the island’s environment and resident’s livelihoods.

The silent protest highlighted the persistent resistance among a section of the island’s population against the mining operations. It served as a platform for the residents to express their sentiments and concerns to the various government agencies in attendance, which were invited by HMC.

Philippine Misereor Partnership Inc.-Anti Mining Campaign (PMPI -AMC), Social Action Borongan, and Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM), who have been steadfast in their support for sustainable development, environmental protection, and rights of nature, supported this action.

PROMISI and its partners stand firm in their commitment to safeguard the ecological integrity of Manicani Island and advocate for the rights and welfare of its inhabitants. Today’s silent protest is a testament to the enduring spirit of the community as they seek a harmonious balance between progress and preservation.
