More than 150,000 demonstrators took to the streets in Portugal, especially public-school teachers and many supportive citizens, to march through the centre of the capital city of Lisbon on Saturday to protest against skyrocketing inflation and the low salaries that teachers are receiving. The lowest paid teachers in Portugal earn less than 1,200 euros a month. That is why they are demanding pay rises, less demanding hours and faster career progression.

As in so many other places in the world, teachers in Portugal today are mistreated, their work is underestimated and society forgets the importance and responsibilities of education.
