Both countries re-establish diplomatic relations at the highest level.

Petro, the new president of Colombia, received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, official representative of President Brahim Gali, Mohamed salem Salek.

Mohamed Salem Salek conveyed to the new Colombian President a message from his Saharawi counterpart, Brahim Gali, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and the President of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.

Also present at the meeting on behalf of the Sahara was Ambassador Mohamed Zrug, responsible for Latin America and the Caribbean.

After the meeting, the Colombian Foreign Ministry issued a statement in which it announced that:

“The Government of the Republic of Colombia, inspired by the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter, reaffirms the validity of the Joint Communiqué signed with the Government of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic on 27 February 1985”.
