It is a year now that Silo left us in his physical body, bequeathing us and everyone a valuable message of the way of active non-violence to take mankind into a benign and adventurous yet non-harming future. We give thanks to Silo this day and carry on the good work. We watch as the protagonists of an open future take to the streets.

A humanist work camp is scheduled to start October 10, 2011, organised in Panauti, Nepal, as the initial efforts to establish Nepal’s Park of Study & Reflection. This is a small town 32km south east of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. Panauti is renowned for its rich history, cultural activities, artistic buildings and year-round festivals.

Twenty-eighth August 2011 an eighteen member group headed by Mawlavi Abdul Hadi joined the peace process in Dareim District of Badakhshan Province, according to South Asian Media Net. Abdul Raouf Rasikh spokesman for the Badakhshan governor told the news agency that with the joining of this group the total number of armed men of Mawlavi Abdul Hadi had upped from 110 to 138.

Hong Kong residents originally from the Indian sub-continent gathered on Sunday past to support Anna Hazare and the actions surrounding the Jan Lokpal Bill, for the fourth week in a row. The event took place at the India Club, Jordan, Hong Kong. The initiators were the volunteer international wing of India Against Corruption (IAC).

Without decent roads people cannot go about daily life with ease, children cannot get to schools easily and farmers cannot get their crops to market. Also, vehicles quickly deteriorate and break down and the cumulative effect is one of dis-communication, heavy costs for repairs on local economies already under stress and a disabling of people’s lives generally.

Late Wednesday night (17 August, 2011) Anna Hazare’s team accepted Delhi police’s latest proposal for holding their protest against the government’s version of the Lokpal Bill, from August 16, at Jai Prakash Narayan Memorial Park, next to Feroze Shah Kotla grounds, New Delhi. The Humanist Party supported this campaign.

Five Filipinos, two of them domestic helpers and two former helpers, are fighting in Hong Kong’s High Court for right of abode, which other immigrants can get after seven years in Hong Kong. The plaintiffs in three judicial reviews want the court to declare that the rule denying helpers residency contravenes the Basic Law, Hong Kong’s mini-constitution.

Gangjeong on Jeju Island, a pristine Unesco-designated ecological reserve where elderly Korean women sea divers, haenyo, continue to forage for seafood. It is also the site of a fierce resistance movement by villagers who oppose the construction of a South Korean naval base on the island that will become part of the US missile defense system ‘to contain China’.

Africa Youth Camp – promoting a culture of peace – is a project of World without Wars and Violence that aims to strengthen coordination among groups campaigning on issues of peace, non-violence, nuclear disarmament, small arms control, terrorism and human rights in Africa and the Middle East.The event will constitute a twelve day Africa Youth Peace Camp meeting in Nigeria.
