In a rapidly transforming world, higher education leaders are called to re-imagine their roles—not just as stewards of their own institutions, but as architects of global collaboration, innovation, and resilience. The World University Network of Innovation for Leaders (WUNI-L) stands at the forefront of this movement, uniting leaders from diverse institutions to shape the future of higher education. At the most recent WUNI-L meeting, held on June 10, 2025, members gathered to chart the next steps for the network, reflecting on progress, refining their shared identity, and reinforcing their commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

WUNI-L was established to foster a global alliance of higher education leaders committed to innovation, excellence, and social responsibility. The network recognizes that the challenges facing universities today—digital transformation, sustainability, equity, global competitiveness, among others—cannot be addressed in isolation. By bringing together visionary leaders, WUNI-L creates a platform for sharing best practices, co-developing solutions, and amplifying the collective impact of universities worldwide.

At the heart of WUNI-L’s identity is its inclusive structure. The network is organized along with three other branches of WUNI, the other two subgroups are the WUNI presidents and WUNI experts. Each member brings unique perspectives and strengths, and together they form a dynamic ecosystem of leadership.

Designing Symbols for a Shared Future

The WUNI logo designs, proposed by Dr. Cynthia Margaretta Jose and her team from the University of Makati, were presented and reviewed by the committee during the June 2025 meeting.

During the meeting, much attention was given to the visual identity of WUNI and explained by Dr. Cynthia Jose from the University of Makati. Members reviewed proposed logo designs especially the one for the W UNI-Leaders, with an emphasis on consistency with the WURI logo, symbolism, and clarity. The laurel, flag, and light bulb were thoughtfully chosen to reflect the core attributes of each group. The placement of stars—traditionally at the top in the WURI logo—was moved to the bottom in the WUNI logos, signifying a strong foundation and the support that leaders provide to the broader university community. An upward-pointing arrow was incorporated to express the aspiration to elevate WURI and its members to new heights.

A key point of discussion was the importance of ensuring that the logos are easily understood by those outside the network. Members recommended spelling out the full name, World University Network for Innovation Leaders, around the logo, enclosed in a circle to symbolize unity and continuity. This approach aligns with the tradition of university seals and reinforces WUNI’s commitment to inclusivity and global engagement.

Recognizing Leadership and Commitment

Another highlight of the meeting was the presentation of certificate designs for board members and executive officers by WUNI President Dr. Robert Frederick Hayden. These certificates serve as formal recognition of the dedication and collaborative excellence that WUNI members bring to the network. The wording of the certificates emphasizes the commitment to shaping the future of universities in an era of rapid transformation, underscoring the vital role that innovation leaders play in navigating change and advancing the mission of higher education.

The process of finalizing the certificates is underway, with members awaiting feedback and signatures to ensure that the documents reflect the highest standards of professionalism and respect.

Fostering a Culture of Dialogue and Celebration

The WUNI meeting served not only as a platform for important decision-making but also as a vibrant space for community building and camaraderie. Expressions of gratitude were extended, especially to those who generously volunteered their time and talent for the design work. The gathering also featured warm birthday greetings for Dr. Cynthia Margaretta Jose of the University of Makati, celebrating her special day. Light-hearted exchanges among participants added a personal touch, notably the shared experiences of Filipinos Dr. Robert Hayden, who traveled to India in 2019, and Dr. Genevieve B. Kupang, who journeyed there in 2008. While waiting for others to join, they exchanged stories about their time in India and shared with Dr. Theresa Nithila Vincent of CHRIST (Deemed to be University, India). These moments underscored that effective leadership is as much about nurturing relationships as it is about strategic planning. The spirit of mutual support and joyful celebration remains a defining characteristic of WUNI’s culture, strengthening the bonds that sustain the network through both challenges and successes.

Sharing of SDG Initiatives, Programs and Projects

As WUNI moves forward, some WUNI leaders shared how their universities were implementing SDG-related programs and projects that create IMPACT are united by a shared vision to be catalysts for positive change in higher education and society at large. The network’s focus on the SDGs reflects a deep commitment to advancing peace, justice, sustainability, and innovation on a global scale. By strengthening its identity, recognizing the contributions of its members, and fostering a culture of collaboration, WUNI is poised to make a lasting impact.

Fundraising Proposal and Concept Paper for the Innovation In Action: Sustainability Expression Wall (IIA: SEW)

The participants discussed several innovative ideas to enhance the upcoming WURI Global Conference in 2025. Among the key topics was the exploration of fundraising proposals, including the possibility of merchandising and bringing local products to sell at the conference, provided space and logistics allow. The group recognized the importance of creative fundraising not only to support conference activities but also to foster a sense of community engagement and cross-cultural exchange among attendees.

A major highlight of the discussion centered on the proposed “Innovation in Action: Sustainability Expression Wall” (IIA:SEW), an initiative for the WURI Global Conference 2025. The author of this article was tasked with crafting the concept paper for this initiative, which is outlined here.  The IIA:SEW is envisioned as an interactive and evolving exhibit that would serve as both a visual statement and a participatory experience throughout the duration of the conference. Drawing inspiration from successful SDG-focused activities at other universities, such as Romblon State University (RSU)’s staircase display of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and multilingual SDG translations, the wall aims to showcase the collective commitment of WURI participants to sustainability and innovation.

The concept involves starting with a blank wall or board on the first day of the conference, inviting participants—including presidents, leaders, experts, and newcomers—to contribute their thoughts, artwork, pledges, or reflections related to sustainability and the SDGs. As the conference progresses from day one to day three, the wall would gradually transform into a vibrant tapestry of ideas, aspirations, and commitments, visually representing the growth and dynamism of the WURI community’s engagement with global challenges.

The IIA:SEW is intended not only as an artistic expression but also as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and inspiration. It would encourage participants to reflect on their own institutional practices, share best practices, and learn from the diverse approaches to SDG integration being implemented worldwide. The wall could also feature highlights from various universities, such as educational programs, research initiatives, community engagement projects, and other activities aligned with specific SDGs.

In addition to the sustainability expression wall, participants discussed the value of compiling a summary of SDG-related activities from each university, accompanied by photos and brief descriptions. This compilation could be presented as a poster or report to the WURI Foundation, further documenting the collective impact and innovation of the network.

The meeting underscored the importance of sustainability not only as a conference theme but as a guiding principle in university operations, academic programs, and community outreach. By creating interactive and inclusive platforms like the IIA:SEW, the WURI Global Conference aims to foster a culture of active participation, creativity, and shared responsibility for building a better future.
