In a time when the world is burdened by conflicts driven by greed, hatred, and unhealthy competition, the need for healing spaces has never been greater. Throughout history, humanity has turned to the mountains and forests in search of refuge, peace, and inner balance. Today, as urbanization accelerates, the importance of preserving and accessing natural spaces for mental and physical well-being is more vital than ever.

On June 16, 2025, Bukhansan National Park in Seoul, South Korea, hosted a special “Foreigners Hiking Experience” — a one-day urban hiking and healing therapy program that brought together participants from diverse backgrounds. Organized by the Korea National Park Service and supported by the Musugol Green Welfare Center, the program offered an enriching escape into nature, right within the bounds of the bustling city.

The event began with a two-hour guided hike along Section 19 of the Bukhansan Dulegil Trail. Led by trained park rangers equipped with mapping and safety expertise, the hike provided not only physical activity but also stunning views of the natural landscape.

Following the hike, participants took part in a healing therapy session that included a traditional Korean foot massage, a serene cypress tree room experience, and a taste of Korean herbal tea, all designed to relax the mind and body after hours of hiking in the mountains.

The growing interest in such experiences aligns with a recent Korea Times newspaper report highlighting the rise of “urban hiking.” The concept is gaining traction, particularly among international visitors and residents, who are drawn to the convenience and newness of reaching natural trails via public transport and enjoying a peaceful escape without the need for extensive planning.

One participant from Argentina shared her impressions:

“I am originally from South America and have lived in Seoul for the past four years. I’ve taken part in many city-organized programs, but today’s hiking and healing experience truly stood out. I discovered a new part of the city with breathtaking views, and the warm hospitality of the park rangers made the day even more memorable. The activities offered at the Musugol Green Welfare Center were a perfect way to end the hike. I will definitely return, it’s an extraordinary place to unwind and find serenity in contrast to the fast-paced rhythm of city life.”

In addition to hiking and wellness, the program included cultural and historical site visits within the park, including the Royal Tomb of King Yeonsan, the Seoul Monument Ginkgo Tree, the Tomb of Princess JeongUi, and the forest’s Twin Towers, adding a layer of heritage and reflection to the experience.

As the planet grapples with uncertainty, programs like this at Bukhansan National Park remind us of the healing power of nature and the importance of preserving such spaces for future generations.
