Next February 5, the Ecuadorian people will go to the polls. The period of mayorships (local authorities) and prefectures (provincial authorities) will take place.

The electoral campaign officially begins today, January 3 and will conclude on February 2. The campaign foresees public debates between those who aspire to be mayors or prefects in those territories with more than 100,000 inhabitants. The Ecuadorian people will elect authorities for 23 prefectures (one per province), 221 mayoralties, 1307 urban and rural councils and, finally, 4109 members of parish councils, the smallest level of the executive structure in the country.

The election day has two other “ingredients”. The country will vote for those who will be part of the new Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control, known in the country as the fifth power and, in addition, will have to vote Yes or No, to each of the eight questions that the government of Guillermo Lasso has presented to the country and which are, strictly speaking, the ones that have already raised national controversy.

Although the results of the sectional elections will be an important indicator of the situation of the ruling and opposition political forces, it will be the result of the consultation that will indicate if the Ecuadorian people continue or not to support Lasso’s administration, which, according to the most recent polls, is barely 16%.
