Karzai will ask that “Taliban names” be removed from UN black list

25.01.2010 - Istanbul - Pía Figueroa

*”I will be making a statement at the conference in London to the effect of removing Taliban names from the UN sanctions list”*, stated President Karzai, who this Thursday at the international summit in London will present a development program aimed at encouraging Taliban fighters to lay down their weapons.

In 1999, the UN established the *”the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee”*, charged with producing a list of people and entities associated with Al Qaida, Osama bin Laden, or Taliban whose bank accounts could be frozen or who are under a travel ban.

*”There has been some resistance to it”* by some members of the U.N., he said, adding that today *”there is more willingness that this can be reconsidered”*.
