Tony Henderson attended this event representing the Humanist Association of Hong Kong where he met up with old and new friends and noted some friends have left Hong Kong to return to Bangladesh, notably Shahid, the proprietor-cook of Dhaka Overseas Club. Shahid came to Lantau Island with a gang of pals – Zoha, Kasim, (and later Rana) Didar and others, where he cooked up a marvelous curry  which we shared after our quite emotional discussion meeting, that was in 1994.

Friend Zoha only occasionally visits Hong Kong now; Rana still has some activities in Bagerhat – a humanist school; Kasim has a fast food establishment in Dhaka, and Kajul continues to run import-export trading from Hong Kong.

As for today’s humanists in Bangladesh, further development beyond the efforts of our group have managed to establish the Bitipara Park of Study and Reflection in Gazipur, outside Dhaka. We also have a Pressenza correspondent in Dhaka, Shamsul – Pressenza (International press Agency) was initiated from within the humanist movement just  a few years ago.

Memories still linger of that first Fieldwork Centre Hong Kong gathering. So not only has the Bangladeshi community managed to get themselves a centre in Hong Kong which they can be proud of, following those early meetings in Chung King Mansion – often in Kajul’s office (after hours), between the humanists and Bangladesh friends, but we have our Park in Bangladesh too – http://www.bitiparapark.org/.

We heartily wish the BAHK centre fulfills its purpose and effects that fine balance between providing a focus for Bangladeshi’s who have chosen Hong Kong as their home, enabling them to maintain links with their cultural heritage, and, have a means of inviting local citizens to enjoy their festive moments as a way to be happily integrated into Hong Kong life.
