Amid political unrest this year Bangladeshis is being celebrating the 45th Independence and National Day on Thursday to mark the declaration of independence across the country. The country finally became independent after a nine-month bloody war on 16 December 1971. Millions of people made supreme sacrifices to build the first independent nation of mostly Bangla-speaking people and put Bangladesh on the world map.

Both president and prime minister greeted the countrymen on the occasion. President Abdul Hamid invites BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to his reception function arranged on occasion of the day.

People say Bangabandhu the founder of the nation cherished to build a golden-like country but his daughter premier Sheikh Hasina pushes the country to instability and anarchy.

Government hands over independence medals to eight eminent citizens. But National Awami Party Chairman Mozaffar Ahmed, who was associated with the wartime Bangladesh government in 1971, refuses to receive the Independence Award. He says he refuses to accept the award as he does not believe in politics that brings benefits. In fact, the country loses all attributes that may help a nation to survive.

Civil administration is arranged in accordance to party-government allegiance while the neutral officials are cornered making them OSD (officers on special duty, means no honour, no duty to them).

Political torture, tyranny, annihilation to opposition opinion, dysfunctional judiciary, one-party polls are now prevailing the country. To change the painful and horrible situation, all the professional and intellectual bodies along with people of all strata opine that only inclusive national polls may bring positivity to the country.

Clinching to power is not the good result; the mind-set not to announce national election schedule is not accepted to the mass people. They are demanding to set free all the political arrested and detained leaders and activists before going to stage city corporation elections or national election for making the initiatives a success. Stopping killing and disappearance, AND barring free-expression, banning of opposition rallies should be immediately withdrawn for creating free and fare atmosphere to the country.
