The Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur bore witness to an emotional milestone in Bangladesh cricket. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially honored the speedster Rubel Hossain, who announced his retirement from international cricket after a career spanning one and a half decades. Amidst thunderous applause from a packed gallery just before the start of the second ODI against New Zealand, the veteran pacer bid his final farewell to the field.
Formal farewell receptions on the field are rare in Bangladesh cricket. In that regard, this ceremony, organized under the leadership of BCB President Tamim Iqbal, stands as a unique recognition of Rubel Hossain’s long-standing dedication.
A Warrior on the Field: A Blend of Pace and Passion
Since his international debut in 2009, Rubel Hossain has been a primary weapon in Bangladesh’s pace attack. His slingy action and aggressive mindset set him apart from his contemporaries. Over his extensive career, he represented the Red and Green in 27 Tests, 101 ODIs, and 28 T20s.
Rubel’s Statistics at a Glance:
  • Test Matches: 36 wickets in 27 matches.
  • ODI Matches: 129 wickets in 101 matches.
  • T20s: 28 wickets in 28 matches.
Statistics, however, only tell a part of his story. His disciplined bowling in the death overs and his knack for providing crucial breakthroughs kept him at the center of the selectors’ plans for years.
The 2015 World Cup: An Immortal Epic
Any discussion of Rubel’s career inevitably leads to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. The match against England in Adelaide remains a turning point in Bangladesh’s cricket history. Rubel’s devastating spell under immense pressure and the sight of him clinching the winning wicket is etched in the memory of millions of Bangladeshis. That victory propelled Bangladesh into the World Cup quarter-finals for the very first time.
Rubel: A Name for Inspiration
During the reception, BCB officials remarked that Rubel’s fighting spirit and pace would serve as an inspiration for generations of upcoming pacers. Despite the highs and lows of his career, his sacrifice for the country and devotion to the game remained unquestionable.
Upon receiving the special honor, an emotional Rubel Hossain stated, ‘I am proud and grateful to the BCB.’ He also remembered coach Sarowar Imran with deep gratitude, acknowledging his pivotal role in his rise. While retiring from international duty, Rubel confirmed he will continue to play in domestic cricket.
Rubel last played an international match in 2021. He finished with 193 wickets across all three formats, including the achievement of taking five-wicket hauls in both Tests and ODIs.
This formal exit from international cricket is not just the end of a career, but a profound expression of gratitude from the state and the Cricket Board. The familiar, aggressive bowler may no longer charge down the pitch to deliver the ball, but his name will remain forever engraved at the ‘Home of Cricket’ in Mirpur as one of the architects of Bangladesh’s pace-bowling revolution.
