A New Horizon for Healthcare in South Asia

by GM Farhadul Mazumder (Dhaka Bureau)
The revolutionary shift currently reshaping the global healthcare sector is centered around Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotic Surgery. Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, a Bengaluru-based institution in India, has emerged as a pioneer of this transformation in South Asia. By integrating cutting-edge technology with compassionate care, the hospital has become a symbol of trust, not only within India but also in cross-border healthcare services.
Precision Treatment Through Technology
In modern medicine, ‘precision’ is of paramount importance. Manipal Hospital has elevated this precision to new heights by utilizing advanced robotic platforms at its flagship unit. The hospital has achieved a unique milestone by successfully completing over 1,000 robotic spine and orthopedic surgeries.
These details were shared during a press conference held on Monday at the Dhaka Reporters Unity by Ram Gopal Bardhan, Chief Manager and Regional Head (SAARC) of Manipal Hospitals’ International Healthcare Services. Also present were Khalid Hasan, Consultant of Manipal Hospitals’ Bangladesh International Healthcare Services, and Vikas Tayer, AVP and Group Head of International Healthcare Services.
During the conference, Mr. Ram Gopal Bardhan highlighted some of the world-class technologies currently in use at the hospital:
  • Da Vinci Robotic System: Simplifies complex and delicate surgeries while making them significantly safer.
  • MAKO Robotic Platform: Has brought unprecedented success in hip and joint replacement procedures.
  • Mazor X: Provides flawless guidance during complex spinal surgeries.
According to experts, the use of robotic technology results in minimal tissue damage, reduced blood loss, allowing patients to recover and return home faster.
Integrated Support for Bangladeshi Patients
The hospital’s ‘International Patient Care’ program holds special significance for Bangladeshi patients. Currently, a large number of Bangladeshis travel abroad for advanced medical treatment. Manipal Hospital has introduced an integrated service model specifically for them. Under this model, patients can avail virtual consultations with doctors directly from Bangladesh.
A specialized international team assists with travel coordination, visa processing, hospital admission, and post-treatment follow-ups.
The experience is further streamlined through expedited specialist appointments and a dedicated international lounge.
Building a Stronger Health Ecosystem
Health analysts believe that the future of healthcare will not be confined to large buildings or infrastructure alone. Instead, the integration of technology and clinical expertise will be the true benchmark of success. Manipal Hospital’s emphasis on evidence-based medicine and research is helping create a robust health ecosystem among South Asian nations.
Leveraging a vast network of 38 branches and 70 years of experience, the Old Airport Road branch has become a trusted destination for high-end oncology and organ transplants.
In an era where healthcare knows no geographical boundaries, Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road has built an extraordinary bridge between technology and trust. It stands as a beacon of hope for South Asian countries- a place where AI and Robotics are not just concepts, but real tools saving human lives.
