In a conversation with Yannis Varoufakis in 2014, disgraced Jeffrey Epstein associate and former president of Harvard University Larry Summers described the political landscape as consisting of “insiders” and “outsiders.” He explained that outsiders prioritize their freedom to speak their version of the truth, but they are often ignored by insiders who make policy and follow a rule of silence. “Insiders adhere to a sacrosanct rule: never turn against other insiders and never talk to outsiders about what insiders say or do. Their reward? Access to inside information.”(1)
In the context of recent revelations about how the upper tiers of government function and what influences their decision making process, Mr. Summers’ observation becomes particularly informative.(2),(2a),(2b)
This is the underlying reason that so many people, rightfully, distrust elites who operate in fields ranging from politics to entertainment to medicine. Due to four decades of rampant financial and other forms of deregulation, an obscenely wealthy clique of individuals from an array of disciplines have been able to collude and assemble an anti-democratic quasi-aristocracy whose near unlimited combined power (and greed) has damaged the sanctity of a range of America’s formerly respected institutions.(3),(4)
Americans are not blind to this. They see it and they feel it, financially and in their conscience. Many people wonder why Americans have chosen a third-rate game show host (who has straddled the insider-outsider line for decades himself) for president twice, almost three times, over the course of the last decade. Straight-up, it’s because people would rather take their chances with an unpredictable rogue like him than turn their future over to the dictates of an entirely predictable, self-serving ivory tower class who operate in a realm that’s fueled by a blind allegiance to an ideology of perpetual war.(5),(5a),(6)
