During his address to the current United Nations General Assembly, President Donald Trump delivered a series of statements that, far from reflecting the truth, amounted to a succession of deliberate lies about international conflicts, the economy, health, and the environment—without any shame and in full view of all the world’s leaders. These lies have been exposed by independent international fact-checkers, media, and global leaders, with many of them barely able to withstand scrutiny.

Lies about international conflicts

Trump claimed that the dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia was a violent war with thousands of deaths, when in fact it was a diplomatic disagreement over the construction of an Ethiopian dam, without any open military confrontation. He also stated that he had stopped an active war between Serbia and Kosovo, but no actual armed conflict exists—only ongoing political and border tensions. Regarding Congo and Rwanda, he insisted that the U.S. helped resolve the conflict, even though hostilities continue and there is no evidence whatsoever of any U.S. mediation. India likewise completely denied that Trump had mediated a ceasefire with Pakistan: not only did such a process not exist, but the conflict continues to be managed bilaterally.

Brazen economic manipulation

The president claimed that inflation in the U.S. was under control, when official data showed a rise from 2.7% to 2.9% year-on-year. He attributed increases in food and energy prices to external factors, without admitting that tariffs imposed by his own administration have made basic goods and electricity more expensive, with electricity rising 6.2% annually. As for U.S. foreign investment, he exaggerated the figures to $17 billion; the White House press office itself admitted the numbers barely exceed $9 billion, and that even that figure is doubtful.

Lies about vaccines and climate change

Trump did not hesitate to downplay the impact of the pandemic and the effectiveness of vaccines, despite overwhelming scientific evidence that they have saved millions of lives. He used his platform at the UN to undermine international consensus and fuel baseless anti-vaccine positions. Even more serious was his statement that climate change is “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated in the world”—climate denialism, in outright contradiction with the science and reports from the UN and NASA, exemplifies a dangerous indifference to the global environmental crisis and the planet’s future.

The international response: Boric urges resistance against liars

The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, was one of the few leaders who faced this barrage of falsehoods directly. From the same podium, unequivocally, he stated:

“It has been claimed, from this very podium today, that there is no such thing as global warming. That is not an opinion, it is a lie, and lies must be confronted.”

Boric pointed out: “In a democracy, diversity of opinions must be respected. But just as I respect that diversity, I confront the insolence of those who lie—especially when they do so knowingly,” and he then recounted Trump’s lies.

An incendiary ending: hell for all

As the closing flourish in his speech, Trump did not hesitate to assert that all the countries present at the UN “would go to hell.” This defiant attitude and succession of deliberate lies have been widely condemned by both heads of state and the international press, evidencing not only a lack of respect but a dangerous disregard for truth and global diplomacy.
