POEM

by Perfecto Caparas

I know there are many, many mothers
Born of our beloved sacred Earth
Mother
Nurturers
Lovers
Life harbingers

You my mother
Are the only one
Who can give me that simple sacred touch
The presence that connects
To the sacred fire deep within

There are many, many countless mothers
Who dare sacrifice
Self-denying care for their children
Never know fear
To answer calls to protect their children

Unbowed mothers
Of all times

To them
because of their sacred love
Earth Mother bows
And sheds tears of love

From her bosom
Our mothers bloom and sprout
Many, countless mothers
Harbingers
To us all
Care that no one else bestows
Loving mothers to us all

To us
Ferocious cry upon birth

Dear Mother
From your bosom
My life’s been nurtured
Through your heart
My energy’s enlivened
Through your breath
My feet tread this soil.
