It seems that certain German politicians have learned nothing from the past. Cancellar Merz of the CDU/SPD coalition wants that Germany’s army becomes the biggest of Europe. The German budget spending on the military sored and is producing an ever larger budget deficit (read growing state debt). Merz did not shy away from anouncing that budget cuts will be done in the sectors of healthcare and education, in favor of the higher spending for the military.
In German schools the army is present now, informing the pupils and students about the glory of being in the army. There is not yet an obligatory conscription, but it is in the make as a reaction to the low favorable response from the young generation to enter the army.
Merz has made overly clear that the reason for his army buildup is Russia. In his imagery Germany will be at war with Russia in the near future and has to be prepared. That precisely Germany must have the biggest army of Europe (again) is at least troubling.
We can hear in this the echos of the past. After the end of WW2 it was decided that Germany should not have a real army ever again. In fact Germany was occupied by the US, United Kingdom and France in its western part, and by the Sovjet Union in its eastern part ( the DDR). This occupation ended with the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and the reunification of West and East Germany. The French and the Brits went home but the US stayed, although with a reduced military presence.
Now that the Trump administration decided to retreat from NATO Europe, the EU has decided to build its own European army spearheaded by … Germany.
Germany has long been the economic motor of the EU and its influence on decisionmaking in Brussels was great. Now that its economy is failing due to the stupid EU sanctions against Russia, Merz decided that Germany can be great again through the building of a great army and transformation of the industry into a military industry. Who did that in germany’s near past? Yes, exactly: Adolf Hitler.
How history can repeat itself when nothing is learned from it. And this happens not only in Germany but more or less in all the countries of the EU. The army buildup, talk about reintroducing conscription, army propaganda, etc. But Germany tops it all.
In Brussels resides the German ‘queen’ Ursula von der Leyen, drumbeating constantly that the EU has to prepare itself for an armed conflict with Russia, even if that means to cut budgets in healthcare and education. Two German leaders! Both drumbeating the necessity to prepare the Eurpean population with emergency kits in their homes (of course paid by the citizens themselves), inducing fear for Russia to get them where these warmongers want them to be. And most of the EU countries follow their lead sheepishly.
For the moment we only see in Germany and Italy growing rallies against these warmongers and war. Lets hope these protests grow fast and break through to millions in the streets. The pressure from below, the voice of Europe’s citizens, is the only way to stop this madness and change the course of events.
Out of the German population has to come the fundamental change of direction that will produce the change of direction of all of Europe towards the emergence of the Universal Human Nation.
