In the wake of the strike that brought thousands of people together in Minneapolis on Friday, January 23, a week after the call for a total blockade against ICE brutality, cities across the United States were involved—New York, Chicago, Denver, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and of course Minneapolis. Here, the demonstration centered around the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building, ICE’s stronghold, and featured the participation of prominent musicians: Rage Against the Machine held a concert, the proceeds of which were donated to the families of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, victims of federal agent brutality. They were joined by a special guest, Bruce Springsteen, whose song “Streets of Minneapolis,” against the horror unleashed by ICE, has become the song of the moment not only in the United States but around the world.
As these images show, Minneapolis has not forgotten Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who have become symbols of ICE brutality and the wave of protest that is shaking the entire country.
Meanwhile, the case of journalist and former CNN anchor Don Lemon is causing concern and outrage: present on January 18 at a protest that interrupted a religious service at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, Lemon was arrested, charged, and then released without bail. The charges against him include conspiracy and interference with the First Amendment rights of churchgoers, despite Lemon’s claim that he was only doing his job as a journalist.
