Humanists are women and men of this century, of this time. They recognize the achievements of humanism throughout history, and find inspiration in the contributions of many cultures, not only those that today occupy centre stage. They are also men and women who recognize that this century and this millennium are drawing to a close, and their project is a new world.
Humanists feel that their history is very long and that their future will be even longer. As optimists who believe in freedom and social progress, they fix their gaze on the future, while striving to overcome the general crisis of today.
Humanists are internationalists, aspiring to a universal human nation. While understanding the world they live in as a single whole, humanists act in their immediate environments. Humanists seek not a uniform world, but a world of multiplicity: diverse in ethnicity, languages and customs; diverse in local and regional autonomy; diverse in ideas and aspirations; diverse in beliefs, whether atheist or religious; diverse in occupations and in creativity.
Humanists do not want masters, they have no fondness for authority figures or bosses. Nor do they see themselves as representatives or bosses of anyone else. Humanists want neither a centralized state nor a para-state in its place. They want neither armed gangs nor a police state in their place.
But a wall has arisen between humanist aspirations and the realities of today’s world. The time has come to tear down that wall. To do this, all humanists of the world must unite.
This is the opening page of the Humanist Document of the Humanist Movement that was created and published in the 80’s of the last century, now about 40 years ago. It formed the base of humanist social actions and activities throughout the world, through organisms such as the Humanist Party ,the Community of Non-violence, Convergence of Cultures, World without Wars and without Violence, World Center of Humanst Studies and multiple grassroots initiatives of humanist action.
This opening page of the Humanist Document was and still is a call for a change of direction in a world dominated for centuries by a violent and inhumaine system that sees the human being as a thing that can be used or discarded at will. With the rise of Neoliberalism in the 80’s of the last century this system arrived at the peak of dehumanisation of the world and the enslavement of humanity to individualism and ever growing consumism, selling happiness through the endless buying of things and confectioned entertainment to distract humanity from itself and its inner world. It is a system of violence built on lies and today those lies has become the driving motor of those who want to throw humanity into a global war, economically, psychologically and military.
The words and invitation written in the opening page of the Humanist Document are more than ever urgent, as they already were about 40 years ago. At that time only few recognized the need for a profound change of direction that would help humanity to get out of the destructive spiral of dehumanisation. Today, and with the many social media to which the whole of humanity has free access, the dehumanisation and the destruction this system is causing, is visible to the eyes of everyone. And nobody in their right mind can negate the urgent need for a new world, for a humanised world, without any form of violence, being it economic, discriminatory, pychological, political, religious or physical.
So the invitation to tear down the wall between humanist aspirations and the realities of today’s world is paramount. And for that to happen all humanists of the world has to unite. That is to say all people who abhor violence of any form must unite and become a unstoppable force that no government, army, riot police, banks or multinationals can stop. A force that stops collaborating with the rules of this system, that stop supporting this system. And the most afficient way to do that is to stop working for it, everybody all over the world. Everything would stop functioning, from the banks to the military industrial complex. Within the time of a week, max two weeks this system and its political and economic powerhouse will stop to exist.
Do not forget that it is the work of the people that keeps going this system. Nothing else. This system says you can do nothing without money. Well, just put a 100 dollar bill on the table and see if it starts to produce something by itself, if it starts to produce goods. We have been so enslaved to the money God that we do not see the simple truth. That we, the common people are the producers of everything, not the banks or the CEO’s in the top of the multinationals.
The time has come to make this happen, in this ever darker moment of human history.
Spread the word through social media. We have already seen how effective that can be.
