In Germany some disturbing developments are taking place. The government of cancellar Merz, who’s great grandfather was an active Nazi, is ramping up war retoric against Russia at a daily basis.

Martin Jager, who took over Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) last month, told lawmakers in Berlin on Monday that Moscow seeks to destabilize European democracies and undermine NATO and that “We must not sit back and assume that a possible Russian attack will not come until 2029 at the earliest.”

Merz proclamed that Germany will rebuild Europe’s most powerful army and if necessary will reinstate compulsary military service if volonteer service won’t be enough.

It is like we hear the echo’s of the 3th Reich coming to hunt us again.

Germany was and is the biggest weapons provider to Ukraine after the US. It sent its Leopard tanks that were used by Ukrainian forces in Russian Kursk, the region were in WW2 the German army was stopped by the Red army. German tanks again in Kursk must have angered a lot the Russian population there, but it was still just some tanks. Now Germany has installed a German military base in Latvia near the Russian border, Latvia being the country where during WW2 Latvian farright nationalists collaborated with the nazis. Not so surprising that Germany of today decided to install its German military base there.

Germany wants to be great again under the guidance of cancellar Merz and his government. Twice in recent history we have seen a great German army and twice we have seen the outcome of those 2 armies: WW1 and WW2.

It might be interesting to note that Hitler built his army in a periode of total collapse of the then German economy, installing a war economy to get Germany on its feet again.

It seems that the same is happening now in Germany with its rapidly falling economy. At least an attempt to do it.

In my opinion the German State never got over it that it lost its historical greatness after the end of WW2. It must have been deeply humiliating that it was forbidden to have a real army and that it stayed occupied by the US, with a standing army of 100.000 US soldiers and military equipment.

When time passed Germany was allowed to participate in NATO adventures with some troops and slowly but steady its army grew again with the benediction of the US. Some 180.000 soldiers at this moment.

Now that the US seems to want to retreat from Europe, the EU decided that it needs to build its own military security and Germany now sees its change to become a strong military player again. In fact it wants to become the strongest player again. It became the economic motor of the EU, and now it wants to become the military motor of the EU. I can hear the echo’s of “Deutschland Deutschland über alles” (Germany, Germany above all) gliding back into the minds of politicians like Merz , Pretorius and Martin Jager. And let’s not forget that Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, who is German, is the most fanatic promotor of a war capable European army against Russia.

Ofcourse today is not 1933. But it seems some nasty habits did not die out. And these habits can provoke a WW3 in Europe, and again against Russia with Germany at the forefront. A dangerous play which would not go well for Europe.

With the current distraction towards a ceasefire and peace plan for Gaza, the disturbing developments in Europe went to the background. What I hope for is that this time the German population will bring a stop to it and demand massively for an end to the Ukraine conflict and a peaceful coexistence with Russia.

A good friend and great Guide* once said that the German population will produce a profound change of direction that will influence the whole of Europe. And my optimistic view is that some signs of this promise are already becoming visible.
