At one o’clock in the afternoon, Tuesday, October 27, the Secretary-General of MERA25 attended via video-link (a meeting with) the Special Investigations Unit for International Judicial Assistance to assist the Spanish authorities as a witness for the prosecution in the case against the private company UC Global which spied on Julian Assange during his stay at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

The company in question had a contract with the US authorities and is being investigated by the Spanish judiciary for violation of the rights of Mr. Varoufakis and other visitors of Mr. Assange. More specifically, it is being investigated for the illegal videotaping and sound recording of Mr. Varoufakis’ private meetings with Mr. Assange, secretly taking photocopies of his passport as well as the contents of his mobile phone. All these details were transmitted by said company to its overseas “customer”.

It is of paramount significance that a European judicial authority is acting against the persecutors of Julian Assange during a time when he is slowly fading away in the British equivalent of Guantanamo (Belmarsh High-Security Prison where for 23 hours a day he is being held in inhuman isolation). For what crime? Solely for having informed citizens of the West of the crimes committed by their governments, behind their back but always in their name.

The Secretary-General of MERA25, a close friend of Julian Assange, who furthermore was one of the founding members of DIEM25, will be happy to testify to the Spanish authorities as part of the joint effort of MERA25, DIEM25 and Progressive International in their support of Julian. In this context, we call upon everyone to raise their voices, demanding his immediate release.
