Ember, a non-profit organization specializing in energy transition, released the tenth edition of its European Electricity Review today, January 22. This annual report highlights how, for the first time, energy production from renewable sources has exceeded that from fossil fuels in the European Union.
In 2025, considering the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) as a whole, the volume of electricity produced from wind and solar sources exceeded that of electricity produced from fossil fuels. This represents 30% and 29% of electricity production, respectively, according to the report’s aggregate data.
In the electricity sector, coal is virtually being phased out, reaching a new historic low in 2025 after years of sharp decline. However, the EU remains heavily dependent on gas, particularly after replacing Russian gas with gas imported from the United States. It should also be noted that the share of energy produced from nuclear sources accounts for more than 20% of global production.
