Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli was forced to resign on Tuesday [September 9, 2025] after young protesters defied the curfew and clashed with police.
The youth were protesting corruption and the fact that 19 people died on the first day of protests and the shutdown of social media platforms, which they believed fueled the protests.
News sources reported chaos in the capital, Kathmandu, with public buildings and politicians’ homes set on fire and the international airport closed.
In recent days, two coalition government ministers, the Interior Minister and the Agriculture Minister, resigned in protest at police brutality.
Prime Minister Oli, leader of the local Marxist-Leninist Party, surprisingly won the last elections a year ago, later forming a coalition government with Congress as its main ally.
