Defense Minister Israel Katz has announced his intention to propose to the Israeli Parliament the closure of Galei Tsahal, the second most listened to radio station in the country; according to the minister, the radio station “undermines the war effort and the morale of the army.”
Galei Tsahal, the army radio station founded in 1950 to reach even the most remote areas of the Jewish state, became an independent radio station in the 1970s and is now one of the few remaining free spaces for reflection, with the possibility of criticizing the government’s choices.
Recently, the radio station had also given voice to the discontent of soldiers and even senior officers over the genocide operation in Gaza.
Director Tal Lev Ram denounced the closure as “a dramatic blow to press freedom and Israeli society” and declared strong action against the measure, supported in this by the Israeli Press Council.
