L\u2019oc\u00e9an s\u2019acidifie quand il l\u2019absorbe et ce n\u2019est bon ni pour les esp\u00e8ces marines, ni pour l\u2019\u00e9quilibre du climat, ni pour nous&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>L\u2019acidification de l\u2019oc\u00e9an, \u00e7a veut dire quoi ?<\/h2>\n<p>L\u2019acidification d\u2019un liquide, c\u2019est <strong>la r\u00e9action chimique qui le rend plus acide<\/strong>, et \u00e7a se mesure en pH avec les fameuses petites bandelettes qui changent de couleur et qu\u2019on manipule en cours de SVT au coll\u00e8ge ! Les scientifiques utilisent des instruments de mesure plus pr\u00e9cis pour mesurer l\u2019acidit\u00e9 de l\u2019oc\u00e9an. Heureusement, l\u2019eau de mer n\u2019a pas encore le go\u00fbt d\u2019un citron press\u00e9, mais<strong> son pH se modifie r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement depuis longtemps<\/strong>. \u00a0Et c\u2019est assez pour poser de s\u00e9rieux probl\u00e8mes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--cms-article-free-content paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"container article-grid-container ckeditor-content\">\n<h2>Acidification de l\u2019oc\u00e9an ? Encore le CO2 !<\/h2>\n<p>Une des grandes qualit\u00e9s de l\u2019oc\u00e9an, c\u2019est qu\u2019il <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tilt.fr\/articles\/locean-pompe-carbone-cest-quoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">absorbe naturellement le CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/a> de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, le stocke et le r\u00e9utilise. Le plancton v\u00e9g\u00e9tal et les algues s\u2019en nourrissent, les animaux s\u2019en servent pour construire leur squelette calcaire ou leur coquille, et <strong>une grande partie du CO<sub>2<\/sub> finit stock\u00e9e au fond des oc\u00e9ans<\/strong>, pour des centaines voire des milliers d\u2019ann\u00e9es, au fur et \u00e0 mesure que les esp\u00e8ces vivantes meurent et coulent.<br \/>\nJusqu\u2019ici, tout va bien.<\/p>\n<p>Le probl\u00e8me est que depuis 1850, en gros le d\u00e9but de l\u2019\u00e8re industrielle, <strong>l\u2019oc\u00e9an en a absorb\u00e9 des centaines de millions de tonnes de plus qu\u2019auparavant<\/strong>. Un tiers du gaz carbonique (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) produit par la combustion du charbon et du p\u00e9trole a fini (et finit toujours) dans l\u2019oc\u00e9an. Et \u00e7a fait beaucoup plus de carbone que l\u2019oc\u00e9an ne peut en recycler.<br \/>\nCet exc\u00e8s de CO<sub>2<\/sub> modifie lentement, mais s\u00fbrement, l\u2019\u00e9quilibre chimique de l\u2019oc\u00e9an. Depuis 1850, <strong>l\u2019acidit\u00e9 a tout de m\u00eame augment\u00e9 de 26 %<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Acidification : les animaux \u00e0 coquille en premi\u00e8re ligne<\/h2>\n<p>L\u2019<strong>acidit\u00e9 accrue de l\u2019oc\u00e9an modifie l\u2019\u00e9quilibre entre les diff\u00e9rentes formes de carbone<\/strong>, et l\u2019une d\u2019elles, le carbonate, devient moins disponible. Or, pas de chance, c\u2019est la brique qui sert aux animaux marins pour fabriquer leur coquille calcaire.<\/p>\n<p>Pour les <strong>r\u00e9cifs coralliens, c\u2019est la cata<\/strong>. Ces r\u00e9cifs ne sont pas seulement de jolis abris de calcaire. Ils sont compos\u00e9s de milliers de colonies d\u2019animaux qui les fabriquent pour se prot\u00e9ger. Or, ces \u00eatres vivants r\u00e9sistent mal \u00e0 l\u2019acidification de leur habitat (ni \u00e0 son r\u00e9chauffement et \u00e0 la pollution, d\u2019ailleurs). Quand les colonies meurent, il ne reste que la partie calcaire qui blanchit. La majeure partie des animaux et des v\u00e9g\u00e9taux font leurs bagages, dans l\u2019espoir de retrouver un lieu protecteur. Et, en m\u00eame temps, les <strong>500 millions de personnes dans le monde<\/strong>, qui vivent de la richesse des r\u00e9cifs coralliens, sont <strong>priv\u00e9s de leurs ressources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Autres victimes : les micro-organismes \u00e0 squelette calcaire. Ils sont invisibles, mais p\u00e8sent tr\u00e8s lourd dans la cha\u00eene alimentaire. Ils appartiennent au <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tilt.fr\/articles\/le-plancton-pilier-de-locean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plancton <\/a>qui repr\u00e9sentent 98 % de la biomasse de l\u2019oc\u00e9an. Autant dire qu\u2019ils sont <strong>indispensables \u00e0 toutes les esp\u00e8ces marines<\/strong>. \u00a0Et que leur sort nous concerne tous.<\/p>\n<h2>L\u2019acidification, c\u2019est grave pour la biodiversit\u00e9 ?<\/h2>\n<p>Oui, parce que <strong>les r\u00e9cifs abritent 1 esp\u00e8ce marine sur 3<\/strong>. Mais ils ne sont pas les seuls \u00e0 fabriquer du calcaire. Les mollusques comme les hu\u00eetres et les crustac\u00e9s rencontrent les m\u00eames difficult\u00e9s. Certaines esp\u00e8ces s\u2019adaptent et peuvent m\u00eame s\u2019en trouver mieux. Pour d\u2019autres, c\u2019est le contraire. Difficile pour les scientifiques de mesurer l\u2019ampleur des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts. Il est s\u00fbr que moins d\u2019esp\u00e8ces \u00e0 coquilles, c\u2019est moins d\u2019esp\u00e8ces tout court. Pour nous, c\u2019est <strong>moins de poissons, et donc moins de ressources alimentaires<\/strong>. Surtout pour les habitants des littoraux dans les pays du Sud.<\/p>\n<p>Et le probl\u00e8me ne s\u2019arr\u00eate pas l\u00e0 : <strong>un oc\u00e9an plus acide, c\u2019est un gros grain de sel dans la machine climatique<\/strong>. Comme sa biodiversit\u00e9 diminue, il absorbe moins de CO<sub>2<\/sub>. Alors que <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tilt.fr\/articles\/locean-meilleur-allie-pour-le-climat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">l\u2019oc\u00e9an absorbait jusqu\u2019ici environ 90 % de la chaleur accumul\u00e9e<\/a> par la Terre et 23 % des \u00e9missions de dioxyde de carbone provenant de l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 humaine, ce r\u00f4le \u00e9cosyst\u00e9mique pourrait s\u2019amenuiser. En bref, l\u2019acidification de l\u2019oc\u00e9an entra\u00eene un cercle vicieux : quand l\u2019oc\u00e9an va mal, il <strong>r\u00e9gule moins bien le climat et perd sa biodiversit\u00e9, le tout \u00e0 nos d\u00e9pends<\/strong> !<\/p>\n<h2>Acidification : que faire ?<\/h2>\n<p>L\u2019acidification de l\u2019oc\u00e9an, comme le r\u00e9chauffement, est <strong>une cons\u00e9quence de l\u2019augmentation du CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong> dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re.
