38 institutos de investigaci\u00f3n y empresas se dispone a perforar la zona del cr\u00e1ter del volc\u00e1n Krafla (Islandia) hasta <strong>una profundidad de dos kil\u00f3metros<\/strong>, con el objetivo de crear el primer observatorio de magma subterr\u00e1neo del mundo.<\/p>\n<p>Ubicado en el noreste de la isla, el cr\u00e1ter est\u00e1 repleto de <strong>agua turquesa <\/strong>y<strong> fumarolas<\/strong>que desprenden vapor y azufre, por lo que cada a\u00f1o atrae a m\u00faltiples visitantes deseosos de hacerse all\u00ed fotograf\u00edas y publicarlas en sus redes sociales.<\/p>\n<p>Pero el volc\u00e1n Krafla no solo concentra\u00a0potencial tur\u00edstico, <strong>sino tambi\u00e9n energ\u00e9tico e investigativo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ReadMore-root dos \u00faltimos aspectos est\u00e1n siendo desarrollados por el equipo del Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT), un proyecto de <strong>100 millones de d\u00f3lares<\/strong> que fue lanzado en 2014 y cuya primera perforaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 prevista para 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abNo existe ning\u00fan observatorio de este tipo y jam\u00e1s hemos presenciado magma subterr\u00e1neo, aparte de tres encuentros fortuitos en perforaciones\u00bb en Haw\u00e1i, Kenia e Islandia, asegura Paolo Papale, del Instituto Nacional Italiano de Geof\u00edsica y Vulcanolog\u00eda, en declaraciones a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20211126-iceland-s-journey-to-the-centre-of-the-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AFP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>La intenci\u00f3n prioritaria de los cient\u00edficos es llegar hasta un pozo lleno de lava, la roca\u00a0fundida a kil\u00f3metros de profundidad que, contrariamente a la lava de la superficie, sigue siendo un terreno desconocido.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abSaber d\u00f3nde se encuentra el magma <strong>es vital para estar bien preparados<\/strong>\u00ab, a\u00f1ade Papale. \u00abSin ello, vamos casi a ciegas\u00bb, advierte.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan el investigador, este proyecto \u00abtiene el potencial de ser un enorme progreso\u00bb en nuestra capacidad de comprender el origen de los continentes, la din\u00e1mica de los volcanes o los sistemas geot\u00e9rmicos. Por otro lado, aspira tambi\u00e9n a avanzar en la explotaci\u00f3n de la energ\u00eda geot\u00e9rmica y en la predicci\u00f3n de erupciones volc\u00e1nicas y sus riesgos.<\/p>\n<h3>Potencial energ\u00e9tico<\/h3>\n<p>\u00abGracias a este proyecto, queremos desarrollar una nueva tecnolog\u00eda para poder perforar\u00a0a m\u00e1s profundidad y <strong>obtener esta energ\u00eda nunca antes explotada<\/strong>\u00ab, indica Vord\u00eds Eir\u00edksd\u00f3ttir, directora ejecutiva de la explotaci\u00f3n geot\u00e9rmica de Landsvirkjun, la compa\u00f1\u00eda nacional de electricidad.<\/p>\n<p>A kil\u00f3metros bajo tierra, la roca alcanza temperaturas tan extremas que adquiere un estado intermedio entre el estado l\u00edquido y el gaseoso, generando una energ\u00eda\u00a0<strong>entre cinco y diez veces mayor<\/strong> que la de los\u00a0pozos convencionales.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, perforar en un ambiente tan extremo constituye todo\u00a0un desaf\u00edo t\u00e9cnico.
