“Committing to the 5% target would not only be absurd, but also counterproductive, because it would take Spain further away from optimal spending and hinder the EU’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the security and defence ecosystem.”
About a week before the start of the NATO summit in The Hague, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez sent a letter to NATO Director Mark Rutte supporting the legitimate right of any NATO ally government to decide on further commitments requested under ReArm, for the 800 billion in armaments target. “It is the legitimate right of every government to decide whether or not it is willing to make these sacrifices. As a sovereign ally, we choose not to commit,” Sanchez wrote.
The conference, which will last from 24 to 26 June, will show whether the Spanish Prime Minister’s important statements, important for peace and security, not to support the 5% armament target will be followed by other Prime Ministers or whether the Spanish reactions will also be overcome.
This morning, the association of grassroots organisations and activists STOP ReArm Europe is organising events in reaction to the European armament paranoia in many European countries – including Greece. Many Greek organizations and activists are members of the initiative and our agency will be closely following the social reactions that are being coordinated.
