Sri Shankar Dasgupta, General Secretary of All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC) has issued the following statement on the victory of the Jammu & Kashmir Electricity Workers Movement’s strike last December 21, 2021:

”The Electricity Workers of Jammu & Kashmir were all government employees under the Power Development Department. But the Jammu & Kashmir Government decided to privatize the Power Sector by way of the formation of a joint venture company with the Jammu Kashmir Power Transmission Company Ltd. and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd.

Against this anti-employee and anti-people move of the Government, the electricity employees and engineers of J&K went for an indefinite strike that lasted from midnight 17 – 18th December 2021. The Jammu & Kashmir Government unleashed all sorts of repressive measures to crush the movement. But in the face of the stiff resistance of the united movement of the employees and engineers, the government ultimately had to back out from its earlier decision of creating a joint venture initiative.

While congratulating all the employees and engineers of the J&K Power Sector for their heroic struggle against the pro-corporate policy of the BJP Government, we urge the employees of the Public Sector and Government Institutions across the country to strengthen and intensify their struggle against the ulterior move of the Union Government’s privatization and disinvestment policy, taking the lesson from this successful uncompromising, united and sustained struggle of the J&K Power workers.”
