According to The Mail Online “Labour MP Chris Bryant last night said the revelations raised ‘serious questions’ about whether Lord Justice Leveson would be able to command public confidence in his role as head of the inquiry, which is likely to take evidence from Mr Murdoch and his son James”… “Business Secretary Vince Cable, who was stripped of his powers over the media last year after boasting he had ‘declared war’ on Rupert Murdoch, yesterday called for new media ownership rules in the wake of the scandal”… “Meanwhile, MPs on the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee were last night still considering whether to recall James Murdoch following claims that he misled Parliament during his high-profile appearance last week”.
The power and money networks are forged early, in privileged schools and universities. Much of the Media is owned by the same economic groups that sponsor the main political parties. Social life for the establishment is a way of keeping the power and money at home.
We are witnessing a rare spectacle; some of the dirt that always goes on, is being put on public display. Many will speak of getting rid of “a few rotten apples” and all will be well. Not true. The system that links privilege to power and oppresses the majority is showing a few cracks, but it continues to manipulate our minds into believing the problem is a few people, not the system. The scandal has given a short respite to the concerns about draconian cuts and price increases. Most people in Britain have received a letter announcing their gas bill is going up by 18%, whilst they read with incredulity that BP, the polluter, the reckless, has made another record profit. Yes, the phone hacking scandal is (for the Government) a welcome distraction.
