The institutions of Salonicco came together at the Aristotelous University to welcome the World March delegation on its arrival in the city. World March delegation in Salonicco

PressenzaSalonicco, 2009-10-29In an official ceremony, Prefect Psomiadis, UNESCO President Tzitzicosta, the Deputy Mayor and the Vice Rector of the University presented their greetings to the World March delegation, which arrived in the city yesterday. Before an audience that included high school students, Tony Robinson, one of the marchers from New Zealand, told of his experiences with the base team, while the European spokesman for the March, Giorgio Schultze underlined the fact that the March is strongly linked to the Charter for a World without Violence and to the summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Berlin in November. Indeed, the World March, just like the Charter, stands for the principle of the golden rule – “Treat others as you wish to be treated.” – one of the cardinal values at the heart of the nonviolent philosophy.

At the conclusion of the event, the March spokesman presented a copy of the Charter to the President of UNESCO, who, in her turn, undertook to ensure the Charter becomes widely known. The symbolic march then proceeded along the main streets of Salonicco, joined by curious citizens, and ended with a press conference attended by national TV organisations. In the evening, the South East Europe team, joined by eight new marchers from Athens and Salonicco, greeted supporters of the March during the opening of an exhibition of photographs dedicated to them.
