Pressenza Pressenza International Press Agency Istanbul, 25/01/10 "I will be making a statement at the conference in London to the effect of removing Taliban names from the UN sanctions list", stated President Karzai, who this Thursday at the international summit in London will present a development program aimed at encouraging Taliban fighters to lay down their weapons.
In 1999, the UN established the "the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee", charged with producing a list of people and entities associated with Al Qaida, Osama bin Laden, or Taliban whose bank accounts could be frozen or who are under a travel ban.
"There has been some resistance to it" by some members of the U.N., he said, adding that today "there is more willingness that this can be reconsidered".
