A day of Action for a Nuclear Weapons Convention

For additional information contact: Tiziana Cardella Location:
Worldwide, United States
On June 5, 2010, thousands of people across the world will take part in coordinated local events to mark Nuclear Abolition Day. The message is simple: it’s time for governments to begin negotiating a Nuclear Weapons Convention to ban all nuclear weapons.

The purpose of Nuclear Abolition Day is to demonstrate that people around the world — in countries with nuclear weapons and without them — overwhelmingly support nuclear abolition. And the best way to achieve that goal is through a legally binding, verifiable Nuclear Weapons Convention.

This is a proposed treaty banning the production, testing, use and possession of all nuclear weapons, and establishing the system of international control required to bring about their complete elimination. The current step-by-step approach to disarmament has failed. It’s time for a comprehensive ban!

We encourage you to help unify our actions on Nuclear Abolition Day by forming the letters “NWC” — standing for “Nuclear Weapons Convention” and “Now We Can” — in whatever way you like. It could be a human formation, a candlelight formation, or simply a large banner. Think creatively!
