There is nothing more unpatriotic than not paying taxes, and we have spent too long allowing good employers to be undercut by those refusing to play by the rules.

Yesterday, I addressed Class – the Centre for Labour and Social Studies – speaking on how we can reverse six years of Tory failure and savage cuts. We need to start with a transparent, accountable Brexit. Labour accepts and respects the vote of the British public, but the government are avoiding scrutiny to hide the fact that they have no real plan. Britain deserves more detail than the government’s empty “Brexit means Brexit” slogan. That’s why Labour is arguing for a Brexit that puts jobs, living standards and the economy first.

And above all we need investment – a country that doesn’t invest is a country that has given up. I’ve set out Labour’s proposal for a National Investment Bank and £500 billion of investment over a decade to bring our broadband, our railways, our housing, our energy infrastructure and our industry up to scratch – to rebuild and transform Britain.

To achieve this transformation, Labour will ensure that all are paying their fair share. Tax avoidance is an act of vandalism against those waiting for an operation, against the elderly suffering inadequate social care, against young people in over-sized classes, against investment into our economy – and the next Labour government will not tolerate it.
