International Romani Language Day

The Alliance for the European Roma Institute wishes everyone a happy International Romani Language Day.  The Romani language, in all of its forms and all of its dialects, connects Roma across generations, across centuries, and across borders. The Romani language is a living language, spoken by Romani people not only in Europe, but on every continent: from Africa to Asia to Australia to the Americas. Our language is our heritage and our history. On this day, we celebrate our language and honor our ancestors who gave it to us.

It is important that we come together every 5th of November to mark our appreciation for the Romani language and those who have taught and preserved it, even in the face of violence and genocide. We honor our authors, our poets and our musicians who allow the language to flourish, and the Romani communities the world over who speak, write and maintain our language as living practice. The Alliance for ERI is committed to preserving, disseminating and celebrating the Romani language, on the 5th of November and on every day of the year.
