As the days count down to the 5th of July and the Greek referendum on whether to accept Europe’s demands for more austerity, which looks increasingly like a referendum on whether to stay in the Euro or leave it, our correspondent Marianella Kloka is providing us with her personal account of life in the middle of the banking crisis.  (The Greek translation can be found underneath the English.)

Part 2: Passengers are kindly requested to mind their “personal belongings”

I woke up today feeling that the eyes of the world are upon us in these days. I started making coffee and while it was preparing I was thinking that somewhere in the world there must be some very important things also happening. Perhaps a scientist is on the brink of a very important invention. A rotten boat full of refugees is sailing desperately in the Mediterranean towards Italy. A child speaks its first word. Someone manages to save his house from an auction by a bank. But for some reason I feel the world’s attention here.

In the metro, at work and in every single thing I have done today this thought has caused me mixed emotions. It has given me strength because in this so historical moment I can feel the collective breath(taking) of millions. I feel their energy calling me to do the right thing, urging me to put people over banks and show that Greece is not only Socrates, Plato, Venus de Milo, the Parthenon, Delphi, Antigone, the Eleusinian Mysteries or Asclepius… but is alive today, with its own “personal belongings”, finds inspiration in its history – the milestones of creation – and is sending a clear message; not to the “Institutions” or the European Central Bank – which are finite concepts which may or may not exist tomorrow – but rather to the Maximum Destiny of humankind, creating a primary surplus for the universal village.

Other times my shoulders sag. The weight is far too big. Is it down to us to do that? A handful of people? Explanations of recent years have talked about the small scale experiment in Greece, because we are few and easy to manipulate. It’s Spain which has the social movements, united and strong. The reaction will come from there. What do we have? We were kicked out of the Square and we scattered. We were brutally attacked with gas and we went back home frustrated, trying to wash our eyes, eat something and get rest.

Us?
Can we?

Meanwhile in the social level:

For those of us who still have a job, it was business as usual. There was an announcement from the government concerning the free use of public transport until the referendum. After that only the unemployed may use it for free.

There was an announcement – more like a warning – from the Ministry of Labour to employers: there has to be no delay on payment of salaries.

Today there was a demonstration by those who want the proposal of the “Institutions” to be implemented.

Is it true that Puerto Rico has announced that is close to bankruptcy today? Nobody seemed to deal with it. Here the big mainstream media have put an on-air countdown, like CNN has, counting down the time to when Greece will declare bankruptcy. A “show time” till the last second. Cannibalism.

Εμείς;
Μπορούμε;
