As the days count down to the 5th of July and the Greek referendum on whether to accept Europe’s demands for more austerity, which looks increasingly like a referendum on whether to stay in the Euro or leave it, our correspondent Marianella Kloka is providing us with her personal account of life in the middle of the banking crisis.  (The Greek translation can be found underneath the English.)

Part 4: Back to the future

I stand among a crowd surrounded by people I don’t recognize. We are in a wide corridor where different exhibits are on display inset into the walls. It surely looks like a museum. Everything is well taken care of, the light, the notes… People are walking around me or standing without any hurry at any exhibit that draws their attention. There is a relative silence. Any conversations are hushed.

I move towards exhibit n.44 and I read. Cross border wall: Invention for a better understanding of an intangible border on the surface of the earth. They have been created in different times and places. This specific piece is part of the Evros wall, 12.5km long, constructed in 2011. During the period of its establishment and with the use of border guards (see exhibit n.45) it cut off the number of people that used to escape towards Europe from the war zone (see exhibit n. 65) in Afghanistan forcing them to use a sea route instead. The number of people drowning due to the use of very low quality boats that used to carry those people increased fivefold. Most of them occurring in Greek and Italian water. After those massive losses European Parliaments organized referendums and banned this specific wall in 2017. This movement was of historical importance as it was the beginning of a total reformation of the refugee (see exhibit n. 66) strategy of Europe.

Exhibit n.49. Auction: process in which assets of a person (debtor) are sold publicly so that another person (creditor) may receive the money lent that the debtor was unable to repay due to financial difficulties. This specific piece is an apartment, a first home of a human being, for which he borrowed money from the bank (see exhibit n.58) in 1998 with a repayment period of 30 years and an interest rate (see Exhibit 51) of 4.5% of total lending. This is one of the thousands of cases of victims of the economic crisis of 2008, which severely hit Europe in the six years from 2009 to 2017.

Very surprised I ask a lady next to me where we are. She answers in a language that I have not heard before yet paradoxically i understand her: we are at the European Museum of Prehistory, in the section “human tragedies.”

The sound of my mobile wakes me up. It’s my dear cousin who I haven’t seen for a long time as he works a dozen hours a day. He urges me to talk to my parents and to collect the debts of the family that should be paid to the tax office as he intends to pay them directly through e-banking. “It’s an opportunity today to give our money to the state and not to the bankers and we will see how we will settle this between us”, he tells me. I remain staring with a vacant look, wondering if I am still dreaming…

Meanwhile in the social level:

The TV adverts for the YES and NO campaigns have been launched. They are being screened on TV and social media.

The news that the IMF proposes that Greek debt needs to be cut by 30% is on the news.

The first opinion polls show that NO is leading (even with closed banks). It seems that people are calm.

Posts on social media are rarer now in comparison with the first 3 days. It seems that people got tired.

I keep receiving all the time messages of solidarity in favor of the NO from abroad. It seems that the dimension of this referendum is being understood.

Μέρος 4: Back to the future
